Take that away suddenly, for millions of people simultaneously, and you'd likely see a strange mixture of responses: anxiety and restlessness in some, a kind of decompression and relief in others. Family group chats gone silent. People genuinely unsure how to reach a parent, a child, a partner in another city. A toddler who simply cannot understand why the cartoon won't come.

There is something almost tender in that image — not a headline about collapsing markets, but a small child's confusion at a screen gone dark, and a parent improvising a song instead. Multiply that small human moment by billions, and you start to sense the real scale of what we're talking about: not just an infrastructure failure, but a sudden, forced return to a way of living most of the world has quietly left behind.

What wouldn't break

It's worth pausing here, because this isn't meant to be a horror story. Plenty would hold. Face-to-face conversation would still work. Books, radio, printed newspapers, local markets, neighbours checking in on neighbours — all of that would still work, perhaps better than it has in years. Communities with strong offline habits, older generations who remember a world before dial-up, places where daily life was never fully digitised, might weather the days with far less disruption than the most "connected" cities. There's a quiet irony in that: the places we sometimes call "behind" might turn out to be the most resilient.

A mirror, not a warning

This isn't a prediction, and it isn't meant to frighten anyone into unplugging their router in protest. It's an invitation to notice something we rarely stop to notice: how much of the world we've built now runs on a single, largely invisible thread, and how quickly the picture changes if that thread is cut.

Perhaps the real value of imagining the quiet is what it teaches us about the noise — that connection, for all the good it brings, was never meant to replace the older kinds: a letter, a conversation, a hand held across a table. The internet made the world smaller and kinder in many ways. It would do us no harm to remember, every now and then, how the world felt before it did — and to keep at least a little of that world alive, just in case.
